Avalard Publishing is a new independent press with strong interests in film, theatre, photography, fiction and Irish interest subjects. It is part of the Avalard group, founded by Robert J.E. Simpson.
Avalard is dedicated to bringing audiences new and previously overlooked talents, insightful criticism, and bringing back forgotten and hard-to-find texts to a new generation.
Owner Robert J.E. Simpson BA, MA, has been part of the entertainment industry for over a decade, and is a reputed film historian, archivist and horror scholar . As a writer he has published on Stanley Kubrick, British horror, and Irish cinema, in various books and magazines including Film Ireland, Little Shoppe of Horrors, Horror Unlimited and The Vacuum. He has broadcast on the BBC, Channel 4 and RTE and been interviewed by the likes of The Scottish Herald, The Times, The Irish Times, Rue Morgue, Time magazine and others, and regularly lectures on film history across the UK and Ireland. He was founding editor of Diabolique magazine and is currently researching a PhD in British film history.
Robert’s encounters with film industry professionals sparked a fascination with the stories of the often anonymous people behind the camera, which in turn led him to book publishing. Originally conceived as a small venture to share lesser known stories by publishing memoirs and histories of film industry friends and colleagues, Avalard has recently signed several pieces of fiction from its authors.
