The Belfast Book Festival, Belfast, Northern Ireland
AVALARD PUBLISHING is pleased to announce a talk and official launch event for its debut print publication – THE LOST LINER by ROBERT CROMIE.
Talk by Diarmuid Kennedy and Robert J.E. Simpson. Taking part as part of the Belfast Book Festival at Crescent Arts Theatre. Tickets: £3.
Robert Cromie is one of the great lost names of Belfast literature. Born in 1856 Cromie was a Belfast journalist and novelist. He was the third son of Dr. Cromie of Clough and was educated at the RBAI. Cromie worked for the Ulster Bank in various parts of Ireland before becoming a full- time writer.
With over ten novels written across 15 years, Cromie was our first science fiction writer of note, creating astonishing future scapes, with his 1910 work A Plunge into Space predating HG Well’s The First Men on the Moon by 10 years. His most famous work, The Crack of Doom, is the first known description of an atomic explosion.
Avalard Publishing have brought back to life perhaps Cromie’s most interesting work, The Lost Liner. In this year of the Titanic ‘celebrations’ what better time to bring back this tale of hubris and strange disasters. In this illustrated event, Robert Simpson of Avalard and Diarmuid Kennedy of QUB will introduce the life of Cromie and explain his uncanny foresight.
A must for all science fiction fans.
